In theory, borders represent what nations are and what they are not. Steven Hahn discusses how theory and history don’t always align. Although borders are thought to include a nation’s ideas and values, historically, borders were not strictly defined. As time progressed, those ideas and values evolved to exclude certain individuals. Hahn gives a historical background to the idea of borders and how they are commonly traversed by political powers. The nation’s success has long relied on immigrants, and to continue the prosperity we must recognize the value they bring to our society.
